What is psychotherapy, and how will you know if it's the right thing for you?
At it's simplest, psychotherapy is just a conversation between two people. The aim of the conversation, and the relationship that develops over time is to achieve a much better understanding of a troubling (and probably repeating) predicament. Psychodynamic Psychotherapy attempts to examine the problematic and sometimes unhelpful ways in which we try to manage difficult aspects of our lives. Feeling left out or overlooked, envious and resentful, or angry and frightened are all within the normal range of human experience, but being overwhelmed and burdened by these feelings can make our lives miserable and unfulfilling.
Psychotherapy aims to help people to get to know the kind of person they are. It can be a challenging "warts and all" process, but it can also help you to understand and come to terms with the nagging difficulties that inhibit personal development and growth.
The explicit aim of psychotherapy is to try to get closer to the truths and conflicts that affect they way we live and relate to each other. It provides a respectful and safe setting in which difficult feelings can be carefully thought about and worked through.
